The Complete Works of Śaṅkarācārya — with the whole commentary tradition

What is here · how to read it

The three strata. Each page shows the मूलम् (verse, sūtra or mantra), Śaṅkara's भाष्यम् beneath it, and — where an alignment exists — the व्याख्या folded in under the very bhāṣya sentence it glosses. Ānandagiri's ṭīkā is present for all twelve prasthānatraya bhāṣyas, as are Bhāmatī, Kalpataru, Parimala, Ratnaprabha, Nyāyanirṇaya, Pañcapādikā, Vārtika and the rest. Turn a commentary on with its chip in the toolbar.

Reading aids. Pratīka — the lemma a commentator is quoting — is set in the accent colour. A citation inside the text is a link: click it to jump to the passage cited, wherever in the corpus it lives. A raised ° or * is a footnote or पाठान्तरम्; click to read it.

Script. Everything renders in देवनागरी, IAST or বাংলা on the fly. Search accepts any of the three, and plain ASCII too: brahman, AtmA, jñāna all work.

Provenance. The text is the Sringeri Śāradā Pīṭham's Advaita Śāradā edition, mirrored here for study. Their editorial apparatus — unit ids, the commentary alignment, the citation index, the abbreviation key — is preserved intact so a reference taken here is a reference that resolves there. Eleven works are not theirs: the सौन्दर्यलहरी, the शङ्कराचार्यविरचितानि स्तोत्राणि collection, the eight independent prakaraṇa texts (आत्मबोधः, तत्त्वबोधः and the rest) and the उपदेशसाहस्री — none of which that edition publishes. They come from the Vāṇī Vilāsa edition (Śrīraṅgam 1910) and, for the उपदेशसाहस्री, Sengaku Mayeda's critical edition. Each names its own sources in its footer, and for all but the उपदेशसाहस्री the ascription to Śaṅkara is traditional, and often disputed.
