Typing tips

  • Long vowels: aa ii uu or A I U → आ ई ऊ / আ ঈ ঊ
  • Retroflex (caps): T Th D Dh N S → ट ठ ड ढ ण ष / ট ঠ ড ঢ ণ ষ
  • Nukta (Bengali): . or = adds ়, e.g. D. → ড়, Dh. → ঢ়, y. → য়. In Devanāgarī, . is a no-op (use =, e.g. D= → ड़)
  • Sibilants: sh → श / শ; nasals: ng/G → ङ / ঙ, nj/J → ञ / ঞ
  • Vocalic r/l: -r -ri -l -li → ऋ ॠ ऌ ॡ / ঋ ৠ ঌ ৡ
  • Conjuncts: kS → क्ष / ক্ষ; jn → ज्ञ / জ্ঞ
  • Khanda ta: t- → त् (Devanāgarī) / ৎ (Bengali)
  • M = anusvāra ं / ং, MM = candrabindu ँ / ঁ, H = visarga ः / ঃ
  • / or | = daṇḍa । (same in both), x = avagraha ऽ / ঽ, O → ॐ / ওঁ
  • Digits 0–9 become native digits automatically.

Switch on Compact to drop short-a typing:

  • Bare consonant = consonant + inherent a. E.g., k = क / ক
  • a (or A) after a consonant = long ā. E.g., tmal → তমাল
  • , after a consonant = halant (kills inherent a). E.g., am,l → অম্ল, an,n → অন্ন, d,roh → দ্রোহ, tt, → तत्
  • , followed by Space = real comma (the halant is reverted). E.g., tmal,  → তমাল,
  • Q after a consonant = halant too, but it never reverts before Space — use it to end a word on a halant. E.g., ttQ → तत्
  • ` (backtick) = merge-shield. E.g., T`h → টহ (no ঠ), j`n → জন (no জ্ঞ), k`S → কষ. Two in a row leave one literal: T``h → ট`হ.
